In an effort to contribute to the general Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) awareness of our clients, we have compiled a one page document containing a high-level overview of the eight processing principles of POPI. POPI was signed into law in 2013,but has not yet come into effect fully.
It is expected that the entire Act will come into force later this year. Municipalities process personal information on a daily basis and although some exemptions for public bodies are provided for in POPI, your municipality will also have to comply with the processing principles prescribed by POPI.
Organisations that do not comply with POPI may face severe fines and possible civil liability.
These principles in the attached document detail how organisations that process personal information of individuals and companies should deal with personal information in its possession. Information on the exemptions applicable to public bodies will follow at a later stage.
